Lampworked Glass Beads

Lampworking is an ancient art form that is growing in popularity.

A Lampworked glass bead
Similar to glass-blowing artists, lampwork artisans create glass beads using fire and tools. These vibrant lampworked glass beads show off intriguing patterns and colours.

I have recently received an order from one of my suppliers which includes some wonderful lampworked glass beads that I will be incorporating into my upcoming designs.

A lampworked glass beadThese pictures show some of the beads included in that order.

The white oval bead above is the most delightful translucent colour with a pattern that reminds me of a peacock feather.

The brown striped beads and the cream & black beads with red swirls are opaque.

The pattern on the blue bead offers so many design opportunities and colour matching choices.

The same applies to this Topaz and teal bead.  It is transparent with an opaque pattern.  I just love it.  It is even better in real life than I imagined it to be when I ordered it.

Due to their handcrafted nature, no two beads are exactly alike, which suits me just fine as none of my designs are the same.

I cant wait to start using these beads and showing you the designs I come up with.

I will be at the Canning Arts Group Gala Daythis Sunday, the 22nd April.

This event runs from 10am to 4pm at the Corner of Riley and High Roads in Riverton.  It is just opposite the Riverton Forum Shopping Centre.  There is plenty of parking and lots of interesting stalls for the whole family.

Find me in Stall 2.

Remember Mothers Day is only a couple of weeks away so call in and find something unique, local and handcrafted for that special person in your life.

Regards
Maxine

Happy Easter

I hope you have all had a wonderful Easter.

We had our son, partner and children here for dinner on Good Friday and then the Grandkids stayed over for the night and went home around 10.30 on Saturday.

As Barney has worked 12 hour shifts on the wharf all weekend, (and I dont have a car at present) I have had plenty of time to myself to do "my things".

The evenings and mornings have been delightful and I have had a couple of lovely walks.  Got some baking done and the freezer is full of meals for those nights I just dont have the time (or inclination) to do any cooking. And most importantly - I have had time to work on some new designs.

These individually handmade porcelain hearts are made in Australia by Robyn Allen Waters and I purchased them in Wollongong when we were over East last year.  Silver butterflies and findings are added to one set while the other has Peridot Swarovski crystals and gold findings.  Although the hearts are quite large, they are very light.

I have paired this set of 3 carved linked elephants with raw copper wire and findings and Unakite gemstone chips.  The stone picks up the colours of the blankets on the back of each elephant and the copper echoes the deep salmon colour within the chips.  This design is finished with a magnetic clasp.

This design is like soup for the soul with a range of metaphysical benefits.  Comprising mostly of Moonstone chips, this necklace uses a variety of gemstones, including, but not limited to Sodalite, Aventurine, Amethyst, Rainbow Fluorite.

3 x faceted cubes are separated by brass spacers and highlighted with gemstone discs and rounds from which 3 strands of Moonstone and other assorted gemstone chips fall.

On the other side these strands weave through shield shaped gemstones highlighted with brass beads and are caught into one strand again at a junction of 3 brass tyre shaped spacer beads.  This design is claspless.

These are some of my recent designs.  Now I just have to write up their full descriptions, price them and list them on the website.  They can be jobs for another day as I have a couple more items to finish before I tidy up the studio tonight.

To see these and other great designs, visit me at the following events or contact me to arrange an alternative appointment.

Canning Bridge Arts Markets 01.04.12

Street Performance - a stilt walker - handed out goodies to the crowd. There was a slight drizzle early on & a little shower, but then the day, although overcast was a beautiful day for the monthly Canning Bridge Arts Markets.

The Canning Bridge Arts Markets are held on the first Sunday of the month at Kishorn Road between Moreau Mews and First Avenue in Applecross, between 9am and 3pm.

Today was only the second month of these delightful markets and of course the numbers of visitors are still building, but today we had repeat visitors from last month and many who had heard of us from visitors to the last months markets.

As word of mouth is generally the best advertising, I am expecting these markets to just keep getting bigger and better.

Musicians and dancers are booked to entertain the crowds at the May 6th markets and as these are the week before Mothers Day, it would be a great chance to visit, present her with a brilliant gift from one of the various stallholders and show your support for local and handcrafted wares.

Large silver-plated cable chain supports 5 x approx 12x14mm Rose Quartz hearts, 2 x 8mm Swarovski crystal clear and 1 x clear AB bicones,5 x Pewter charms and 2 x approx 5mm Rose Quarts Hearts. All the Rose Quartz hearts are highlighted with 3mm Swarovski crystal clear AB bicones. The pewter charms consist of 2 x falling heart charms, 1 x round Natural Amber earrings.

Two of my favourite pieces found new homes today.  To me they represented time -  one the past and the other looking into the future.

The natural Amber drop earrings have wonderful inclusions within them.  Captured images of time past.

The Rose Quartz and Swarovski Crystal bracelet sends forth wishes of Hope and Love into the future.

For further information on my designs or where you can visit my stall, please contact me.

Best Wishes

Seedbeads in the peyote stitch include hex cut, cubes, silver-lined, clear colour lined, AB finished, translucent, transparent and matt finished.  The colours consist of basically green and topaz tones with a sprinkling of gold, clear, grey and red to add depth to the piece.

Part of this unusual design is the peyote completely encases one side of the donut (keeping it in place on the necklace), but the other side is not attached, simply threaded though – as per the close-up photos.  It can be worn either way.

The necklace has a centre core of tiger-tail wire for added strength.  The beads are then stitched onto and around the wire to form the freeform design.

It is finished off with a bronze clasp and extension chain and measures approx 45.5 plus the extension chain and pendant.

Remember for your chance to win these and other beautiful items donated by other stall-holders, you need to visit us at the Perth Waldorf School, 14 Gwilliam Drive, Bibra Lake (next to Adventure World).

Todays Design

Today I have been playing with some of the chain I have in my stash.  While experimenting with different grouping and patterns etc, I came up with this mixed metal design.
Mixed metal necklace, sections of brass, silver and gold chain
The gold coloured rolo chain in the centre adds some weight to the strands and creates a nice drape.

The small silver plated leaves on that section of chain add loads of movement and a bit of bulk to the design.

The brass chain and connectors add a depth of colour to the design and bring it all together.

Mixed metal necklace, sections of brass, silver and gold chain The gold plated neckchain adds contrast to the heavier gold section in the front and is finished with a gold plated lobster clasp and a small gold plated drop and length is adjustable.

I have just completed this piece and have not had time to price it yet.  Look out for its listing on the website shortly.  If you cant wait to make it your own then contact me.

Remember I will have many new designs at the Reconnecting Art & Community event in March.

What do you wish to achieve in 2012?

Wishing you all a Happy New YearWith tonight seeing the end of 2011, it is time to reassess our desires and refocus on our dreams.

It is a time of celebration, of a new beginning and it offers us much, but to achieve we need to have clear and realistic goals, achievable timeframes and know what the rewards for our effort will be.

Getting fitter and healthierMy personal goal is to get fitter & healthier.  If this also means losing weight then bring it on.  I have a cross-trainer (elliptical machine) that I haven’t used consistently for a while.  My aim is to use it each morning for 20 mins at least and slowly but consistently increase either the time or the distance.  Once I get into the swing of things (I am thinking a couple of weeks) I will add some weight resistance to my programme, to speed up weight loss and tone up.

I am not going to tell you what my current weight is, but I will let you know how things are going and what improvements to my fitness I have achieved.

Handcrafted original jewellery & beadworkMy business goal is to develop a business plan and work to it.  I would like to at least double my business exposure this year by participating in more Artisan Markets and competing in state, national and international competitions. I will also send items to several of the magazines I read, both as pictures for “readers galleries” and instructions on how to make some of my designs.

If you are able to help with suggestions for competitions to enter, or magazines to get published in, it would be greatly appreciated.

You can contact me at artist@maxinefaye.com or via the contact form on my website, www.maxinefaye.com or just ring or text me on 0414 864 965.

Good LuckIt is wonderful to be able to wish you all a Happy New Year.  I hope you and your loved ones stay safe and that the coming year will be one full of Love, Joy and Success.

I also wish you good luck in the 31 Million Lotto draw!!

Best Wishes
Maxine

Pulse Art Studio in Spearwood.

The following pictures are from the last private event at the Pulse Art Studio
in November 2011.  There were hands-on demonstrations and workshops, musicians, community mural painting, meditation and healing offered over both days of the weekend.

Reconnecting Arts & Community Weekend Event

Over the weekend of November 5th & 6th the Reconnecting Arts & Community Group held an Art Market and Open Day at the Pulse Art Studio in Spearwood.

We had a shaky start with some last minute hiccups with the Health Department, but with the support of Councillors and the Mayor we continued, with some changes and made it a private event - by invitation only.  Invites went out via word of mouth, email, facebook etc.

Although the Saturday was quite wet, we had many brave souls come to try out the workshops and participate in the event.

Sunday, although a little damp, was in general a much nicer day and again people came to participate in the demonstrations, workshops, to paint on the community mural, listen to the music, meditate, have a blessing or healing and just join in with the positive feel of this community minded event and meet the artists, musicians, facilitators and other members of their neighbourhood.

The next event is planned for March, 2012.  At this stage it will be held at the Waldorf School in Gwilliam Street, Bibra Lake.

For further details, please email me, keep an eye on this blog or register your interest with the Reconnecting Group.

I will have a stall over the weekend, so it is a great chance for you to see my designs "in the flesh", and try them on.

I will be demonstrating how to wire-wrap glass beads into
beautiful butterflies.

Swarovski crystals form the tail of this amethyst coloured dragonfly.
These can then be used as brooches, suncatchers, ornaments and make wonderful and inexpensive gifts.

Other artisans will demonstrate woodwork, ceramics, stonecarving, painting,  textile dyeing and resin rings.

Music, dance and healing practitioners will all be in attendance over the weekend.

Details will be updated on my website and facebook page.

I look forward to seeing you sometime over the weekend.

Reconnecting Arts and Community

A Community Newspaper article on the Pulse Art Studio Community Art Market in Spearwood, Western Australia. The Pulse Art Studio Community Art Market I was honoured to be a stall holder at is developing to now include the Reconnecting Arts and Community Facebook page.

I have taken the following excerpt from that page.

Mission - The overall intention is to bridge the gap between ourselves and our community, getting to know our neighbours, and build better dialog and better relationships with one another.

Through getting involved in the arts, people may also be inspired to pursue other artistic endeavours, and though this foster better communication and build positive relationships.

Description - This working group was created to bring people together to reconnect with creativity, the arts and our community.

In order to do this our group organises ‘Community Art Markets’ where we invite local artists, musicians and crafts people to share their own work with others through stalls, a small exhibition and most importantly through short interactive workshops and demonstrations available to the public. Our goal is to bring something new to the usual ‘markets’ by encouraging a peaceful environment and homely feel, as well as sustainable community space where people can come, experience and participate.

Pictures taken from the Pulse Art Studio Community Art Market. One showing me busy beading.
Pulse Art Studio Community Art Markets
This is a piece taken from this week’s local newspaper on the Pulse Art Studio Community Markets that were held last weekend in Spearwood.

The photo of me isn’t great (a bit bright) but it was good to get a mention, not just for myself, but great for the Markets.

Nis and Danica are planning the next one for the end of October/beginning of November, so if you would like to be involved - as a stall holder or a visitor, remember to keep an eye out for details as that time gets closer.

Bead Guild of WA "Summer" 2011 Bead Challenge
I have also taken an excerpt out of the Bead Guild of WA's Feb/March newsletter showing some of the other entries in their "Summer" bead challenge.  Click on the following PDF to see the different ways each of the bead artists used the items supplied in the kit.  There were more entries than shown here and hopefully they will soon be able to view on the Bead Guild of WA website.

Pulse Art Studio Community Art Markets

This weekend's markets were a success.

I wasn't able to make Saturday, but although it was very hot, there was reports of a good turn out with members of the local Council visiting and making some purchases.  The Council also discussed the option of a possible grant for future Community Markets.  Wonderful!!

Sunday started out hot and muggy, but just as the heat was getting a bit much, a lovely little breeze came in and it turned out to be a delightful afternoon under the trees.

Click on the above picture to see more photos of the markets.

I had set up my stall in the front yard.  My necklaces I left in their storage packets and hung them from the clothesline.  They looked good and were easy for people to see.  I set my earring and bracelet display up under a lovely gum tree near the clothesline and the other side of the front path I put my display table.  I popped my chair under a pine tree and once the breeze came in I was quite happy sitting there beading or wondering around chatting to visitors and other stall holders.

No great crowd showed up, but a steady trickle of people came and went all day.  Some bought, some participated in the workshops and others came for healing sessions or to eat some of the wonderful food that was available.  Most were delightful and the overall energy at the studio was great.

Nis and Danica are planning the next market for October/November so make a note in your diary and drop down for some great Christmas gift ideas, or just to enjoy the atmosphere of the Community Art Markets at the Pulse Art Studio.

Read Nis's community empowering vision below.

The Vision for the Pulseart Studio:
I feel that I am being called to make a space for art and community, here where I live. It’s my passion and dream. I’d like to invite you to share it with me.
My home in Spearwood is no longer needed as a family space to bring up children. I want to make a different kind of home: for art, craft, local people.
I want to share with you, and with our community, my sense of gratitude for life. I want to help others see the beauty around us.
My passion is to create a place where people feel that they can belong. It will be a place to come together through arts, craft and music.
My dream is that we sustain this place, and it sustains us. We can listen and talk to the trees and plants. We can value everything in nature that makes the world the wonder that it is.
So, if you are inspired by my words, please join me. You can get involved in a small way, or a big way. You can join me in creating a space from and for the heart, in a society that is run so much from the head.

I believe that we have all helped create the world around us. If there are things that don’t feel good to us, then it’s up to us to recreate something new.
And it’s time for me to give back to the community of teachers and friends that I have found here in W.A.
Please help me create a space where everyone can use art to celebrate and enjoy the richness and beauty of life.”

Blessings  Nis

Cockburn Spring Fair

I have just finished off the last couple of items for the Rotary Spring Fair tomorrow.

Here are a couple of the Footless Sandles I have been making...

These are just perfect for the beach or pool and expecially a seaside wedding.  Anywhere you want to be barefoot, but add a little bling with the crystal sliders and Czech fire-polished glass crystal beads.

The Neoprene rubber section for between your toes makes them very easy on the feet (no rubbing) and the ribbon tie means they will fit from quite small to large foot size.

I can replace the ribbon with a chain and catch preferred.

And here are some tassel earrings I have been experimenting with...

I love the regal burgundy colour of these tassels and they look brilliant with both the silver and copper findings.  I have made some this length and some longer shoulder dusters.

Punched Copper coloured bead cones highlight burgundy coloured tassels and are finished with a copper flower shaped spacer. Approx 8cm lone

I have also made bookmarks, key rings, bag charms and many other items suitable for gift giving, stocking fillers or priced low enough for children to be able to purchase.

I offer free wrapping, which includes a small gift card or for a little extra you can purchase a lovely gift box or bag.

And of course there will be loads of my other beautiful items, so treat yourself, or your loved ones, to something special this Sunday.

Remember the Fair is a Holloween theme and there will be fireworks in the evening so come in your party mood.  :o)

Cockburn Community & Cultural Council Exhibition

The Exhibition was only open for 4 hours this afternoon and there was a reasonable turnout for the official opening by the local MP, but it was mostly very quiet with only a few sales.

Some of the work in the exhibition though is outstanding.  The photography section - only small has some great items and I love the one who got first prize.  One of the watercolours of the wharf is also brilliant.  So many diverse styles.

The sculpures and needlework items are interesting and the wood turning is beautiful.

There was a good variety of styles in the Jewellery section with some of the pieces made by other members of the Bead Guild of WA so it is thrilling to be able to say that I won 1st prize in the Wearable Jewellery section with Deandra - a metal and crystal piece.

Deandra - First Prize Winner in the 2010 Cockburn Community & Cultural Exhibition of Wearable Jewellery section

Tomorrow (Sunday 17th October) the exhibition is open from 9.30 to 4.30 with entertainment and the award ceremony during the afternoon, so hopefully more people will visit during the day and sales will improve a bit.

Cockburn Community & Cultural Council Inc Exhibition and Sale of Work

Well it’s been a busy couple of weeks, but the time is up now.  I set up tomorrow morning for the above Arts & Crafts Exhibition and sale of work.  I have 3 items in the exhibition and a table stall area for the weekend and have been busy making items for sale.

I have made some lovely necklaces and earrings, but have also made some bookmarks, key rings and bag charms and some simple earrings all from between $5 and $15 (one for $18) so children can afford to purchase them either for themselves or as gifts - even as stocking fillers for Christmas.

I have been making some pieces out of old retro buttons and am pleased with how they have turned out.  Still finishing off two of them as I needed more jump rings.  Should get them done over the weekend and will then start taking photos of all the new work to show you.  Haven’t had time yet to take the pictures or even price them yet, let alone get them loaded onto the website - BUT they are coming so stay tuned...!!

If you are able to come to the Exhibition it is in the Spearwood Dalmaniac Club, Cnr Azelia & Hamilton Road, Spearwood, WA from 12.30pm - 4.30pm on Saturday 16th and from 9.30am to 4.30pm on Sunday the 17th.  There will be some entertainment and is a gold coin donation for entry.

Remember - if you can’t get to this Exhibition, that the Cockburn Rotary Spring Fair is on Sunday 31st October at Manning Park, Azalia Road, Spearwood.  Halloween theme and will finish off with fireworks in the evening.  I will have my marquee at this event and a couple of friends for helpers so drop by and say hello.

Best Wishes
Maxine

The Bead Guild Exhibition is over for another year.

I have just returned from collecting items from the Exhibition in South Perth.  At this stage it looks like this will be the last one held in Heritage House as South Perth Council is moving its collection to their Library and I believe the building will be used for other businesses (i.e. Real Estate).

Next year it will possibly be an online competition and exhibition.  Many of the current competitions are done this way and it makes it more accessible to a wider range of artisans.

Tomorrow midday I will see how the “Ogiku” necklace went in the Wongan Arts Society Competition – Looking forward to receiving the judge’s feedback on it.  My first major brick stitched item!

Now I have started making some smaller and “kid” priced items for Christmas gifts to sell at the two Cockburn events.  Today have been making key rings and book marks – trying to do unisex designs, but just can’t help it – I keep adding crystals and bits of bling....  I will have to look at doing a range of Men’s things – I have bought some lovely wood, gemstone and ceramic beads to use for this.

Anyway – Such a beautiful day today so I’m off to crank up the BBQ for tea.

OGIKU (Big Chrysanthemum)

I have just finished this piece for the Wongan Arts Society Exhibition next weekend.

I am pleased with the result, but it doesnt look like the original design.  The componants do, but I was thinking of linking them together as one mass, but it just didnt work and I kept breaking beads and had to make some of the  componants several times :o(

A Kimono print was the inspiration of the colours and design of this piece.

The smaller glass seedbeads are a combination of Japanese Mill Hills, Delicas, Toho with Miyuki fringe beads around the outside of each component.

The larger glass beads consist of black Jablonex (Czech) rounds, Czech Ruby and White Opal Druk beads, glass pearls and faceted Chinese glass crystal.

Some of the componants are flatter while others are more curved than others to give more texture and movement to the design.

The necklace is finished with red Russian braid which ties allowing the length of the piece to be altered to fit either the wearer or the cut of the blouse being worn at the time.

Exhibition feedback :o)

Well another week has zoomed by.  I hope all the Dads out there had a great Fathers Day.  We went to AQUA.  Nikkita loved the sharks and looking at Nemo through the magnifying glass.

ROMANTIC - Necklace. This wood, metal and crystal necklace won First prize and sold on the first day of the exhibition.I have had some lovely feedback from people who have visited the Exhibition in South Perth.  Thank you for taking the time - both to go and look at the Exhibition and to ring or email me with your wonderful reviews.  You made me feel on cloud 9.

I am currently working on the piece I am entering into the Wongan Hills Show.  I have made most of the components, but am having a blank with what to do now.  It isnt sitting just how I want it to do with the original design so I have to tweek it a bit......  Im sure an idea will come to me soon.
JUST FOR FUN - Necklace - This piece was inspired by a Kimono.
In the meantime I have been busy sewing new table clothes and display thingys for the two Cockburn events coming up in October.

This week I received an order of some lovely creamy coloured seedbeads in various sizes, finishes and shapes to make a birthday gift.  I had been looking in the local stores and not found much at all.  Lots of whites, but not the pale yellowy cream I wanted to match some glass pearls.  This will be the next project - once the above piece is sorted!!!

Anyway - back to the sewing machine.  Have a great week and I will catch up next time.
