What do you wish to achieve in 2012?

Wishing you all a Happy New YearWith tonight seeing the end of 2011, it is time to reassess our desires and refocus on our dreams.

It is a time of celebration, of a new beginning and it offers us much, but to achieve we need to have clear and realistic goals, achievable timeframes and know what the rewards for our effort will be.

Getting fitter and healthierMy personal goal is to get fitter & healthier.  If this also means losing weight then bring it on.  I have a cross-trainer (elliptical machine) that I haven’t used consistently for a while.  My aim is to use it each morning for 20 mins at least and slowly but consistently increase either the time or the distance.  Once I get into the swing of things (I am thinking a couple of weeks) I will add some weight resistance to my programme, to speed up weight loss and tone up.

I am not going to tell you what my current weight is, but I will let you know how things are going and what improvements to my fitness I have achieved.

Handcrafted original jewellery & beadworkMy business goal is to develop a business plan and work to it.  I would like to at least double my business exposure this year by participating in more Artisan Markets and competing in state, national and international competitions. I will also send items to several of the magazines I read, both as pictures for “readers galleries” and instructions on how to make some of my designs.

If you are able to help with suggestions for competitions to enter, or magazines to get published in, it would be greatly appreciated.

You can contact me at artist@maxinefaye.com or via the contact form on my website, www.maxinefaye.com or just ring or text me on 0414 864 965.

Good LuckIt is wonderful to be able to wish you all a Happy New Year.  I hope you and your loved ones stay safe and that the coming year will be one full of Love, Joy and Success.

I also wish you good luck in the 31 Million Lotto draw!!

Best Wishes
Maxine

Merry Christmas

Rudolf cup cakes for the kids
I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a safe and happy Christmas and a coming New Year full of Love, Joy & Success in all your endeavours.

Hopefully you, like I, have nearly finished all the baking, tidying and wrapping for the next couple of big days of fun, family, friends and feasting.

10 of us are spending Christmas Day with friends and are each taking some items of the luncheon to share and enjoy aboard their boat whilst cruising the Swan River.  Should be a relaxing and fun-filled day for us all.  I have cooked the turkey (cranberry & pistachio stuffing) and will make a garden salad tomorrow morning.  These will be added to the ham, prawns, potato salad, bean salad etc and finished off with pavlova and tiramisu, (and a couple of drinks....).

Boxing Day will see most of my family here for the afternoon and Dinner.

I have made a plum and wholegrain mustard glazed ham which looks and smells great (alright I tasted a little bit that “dropped” off and it tastes good to).  We will light the BBQ up for dinner and do garlic banana prawns, satay chicken kebabs, lentil patties and falafels.  I will make another garden salad with oven roasted tomatoes, avocado, buffalo cheese, our own eggs, etc and a potato au gratin.  Barney will do his famous BBQ potatoes served with sour cream and sweet chilli sauce.  These will be served with a range of breads, buns and wraps.

Dessert is a choice of steamed fruit puddings and brandy custard or a sponge fruit flan and cream.

If anyone should manage to still be hungry there is an assortment of cheeses, fruits, nuts and apricot nibbles (instead of rum balls).

For the kids (and kids at heart) I have made some Rudolf (or Rudette)the Reindeer cupcakes (pictured)which look cute and hopefully will last until Monday....

If my planning is correct, we shouldn’t have too many leftovers.  I have done a range of things, but not too many of each so everyone can have a taste, but not overeat as is usual at this time of year.  The exception will be the ham, which will please Barney as it is one of his favourite things and he will nibble on it for the next week or so and then I will freeze the leftovers and bones to make pea and ham soup in the cooler months.

Ok, I’ve had a break, just have the floors to do and that’s it – finished!!
Hope you are all able to relax and enjoy the festive season with loved ones.
Merry Christmas!
Maxine xxx

Free the Bears challenge

A recent "challenge" as part of the Bead Guild of WA's monthly meeting was to decorate a Belvedere Bear from the Free the Bears Fund.

A Free the Bears Fund Belvedere bear sitting in the flowers
I was at the Reconnecting Arts & Community Event and wasn't able to get to the meeting to collect my bear, so he arrived in the post a few days later.

This little "beanie bear" was a little thin when he arrived, so my first mission was to put him on a better diet and fatten him up a bit.  Then I had to decide how to decorate him.

A Free the Bears Fund Belvedere bear sunbaking on the rocks
As a beader (and as this was a Bead Guild Challenge) my first instinct was to bead him from head to toe, but then (in my over-imaginative mind), he would have been saved brom being butchered or milked for bile only to send him to the streets as a tortured Dancing Bear
This would not do!

A Free the Bears Fund Belvedere bear eating strawberries from the garden

Then I thought if I had been a bear .... who had been locked in a cage or tied to a rope, what would I want to do if I was free..... ROMP IN THE WILD!!!!  So that is what happened.

My bear has been embroidered with a vine which has wrapped around him as he has rolled on the forrest floor and he has a bunch of blossoms on his bottom where he has sat in the meadow and wondered at the wildflowers and all the beauties of nature which he never envisaged during the terror and torment of his previous life.

A Free the Bears Fund Belvedere bear enjoying the great outdoors.
Belvedere can now play near the pond, look at the fish, visit the vege garden and check out the strawberries, play in the flowers and get lots of hugs from the grandchildren.  He, like many others the Fund has helped, can have a better life.

If you would like to help the Free the Bears Fund, all donations are used 100% towards the bears.

Reconnecting Arts & Community Weekend Event

Over the weekend of November 5th & 6th the Reconnecting Arts & Community Group held an Art Market and Open Day at the Pulse Art Studio in Spearwood.

We had a shaky start with some last minute hiccups with the Health Department, but with the support of Councillors and the Mayor we continued, with some changes and made it a private event - by invitation only.  Invites went out via word of mouth, email, facebook etc.

Although the Saturday was quite wet, we had many brave souls come to try out the workshops and participate in the event.

Sunday, although a little damp, was in general a much nicer day and again people came to participate in the demonstrations, workshops, to paint on the community mural, listen to the music, meditate, have a blessing or healing and just join in with the positive feel of this community minded event and meet the artists, musicians, facilitators and other members of their neighbourhood.

The next event is planned for March, 2012.  At this stage it will be held at the Waldorf School in Gwilliam Street, Bibra Lake.

For further details, please email me, keep an eye on this blog or register your interest with the Reconnecting Group.

Make your own Butterfly Suncatcher - I will show you how.

Come and join in the fun, participate in some hands-on workshops, watch demonstrations by local artisans and meet your community neighbours.

Green handmade glass beads form the base of this beautiful butterfly.

I will have a stall over the weekend, so it is a great chance for you to see my designs "in the flesh", and try them on.

I will be demonstrating how to wire-wrap glass beads into
beautiful butterflies.

Swarovski crystals form the tail of this amethyst coloured dragonfly.
These can then be used as brooches, suncatchers, ornaments and make wonderful and inexpensive gifts.

Other artisans will demonstrate woodwork, ceramics, stonecarving, painting,  textile dyeing and resin rings.

Music, dance and healing practitioners will all be in attendance over the weekend.

Details will be updated on my website and facebook page.

I look forward to seeing you sometime over the weekend.

Out on the Town

I designed this set as part of the “Out on the Town” Bead Guild of WA bead challenge.

Out on the Town set consisting of beaded neckpiece, bracelets and earrings made usingCzech M&M’s and Atlas beads, glass, filigree and stardust rounds, Japanese Miyuki cube beads and seedbeads and Rose Montees.
The Guild supplied the basic kit consisting of Czech M&M’s and Atlas beads, glass, filigree and stardust rounds, Japanese Miyuki cube beads and seedbeads. All beads in the kit are available from the Bead Company in Osborne Park.  I purchased extra stardust rounds, Miyuki cubes and silver lined clear glass seedbeads.  I had the Rose Montées from a previous design.

The sketch and basic design information for the Out on the Town set.I am quite pleased with the outcome as the piece came out very close to my sketching with only a few minor changes made during the process.

Simple earrings featuring stardust and black glass round beads.I kept the earrings very simple as the neckpiece, although only in black and silver, is quite busy with the different shapes and textures.  One of the bracelets is formed of spiraling silver-lined clear and black seedbeads, while the other uses the Japanese Miyuki cubes as the base and is embellished with different sized silver lined clear glass seedbeads.

This bracelet uses Japanese Miyuki cubes as the base and is embellished with different sized silver lined clear glass seedbeads. This bracelet is formed of spiraling silver-lined clear and black seedbeadsBoth bracelets are finished with smooth silver-plated toggle clasps while the neckpiece has a strong magnetic clasp for easy wear.

Jean won the competition with a black filigree headband which she had embellished with components made from the beads in the kit.

A close-up of the centre component of the neckpiece showing the Czech M&M’s and Atlas beads, glass, filigree and stardust rounds, Japanese Miyuki cube beads and seedbeads in the design .
The pieces entered for judging were of a high standard, but the numbers were low, which was disappointing as the Guild had extended the due date by a month as several members had indicated they needed more time and then didn’t enter.

I am now designing and making items for the Annual Bead Guild of WA Competition which this year, for the first time, will be judged by photos of the items instead of in “real” life. Click here to see my winning design from last year.

Recycled & Retro designs

These are some of the Recycled & Retro pieces I have been given or found recently. Today I have been cleaning them and dislodging any loose stones and crystals etc. ready for fixing or remodelling. These are some of the Recycled & Retro pieces I have been given or found recently.

Today I have been cleaning them and dislodging any loose stones and crystals etc. ready for fixing or remodelling.

Two of the pieces are being fixed for a lovely regular customer.

Most of the components had some lost stones or findings before I started cleaning, but after washing and brushing, many more of the crystals fell out of their settings and the painted coatings have come away from the metal.

A few of the filigree stampings are now completely (or nearly) void of crystals.  I will use them as blanks and not worry about resetting their original "stones".

RECYCLED & RETRO - Most of the components had some lost stones or findings before I started cleaning, but after washing and brushing, many more of the crystals fell out of their settings and the painted coatings have come away from the metal.A couple pieces are quite brittle so I am going to butcher them and use their crystals in other settings.

These brooches, buckles, pendants, necklaces and other components can be remodelled or mended and provide many more wonderful years of joy to their now wearer while still retaining their history.

I will list them in the Recycled & Retro section of my website, but if there is a piece you see that you would like me to remodel in a certain way for you, please don't hesitate to contact me and arrange to commission an item.

Ogalala Lace stitch

While the Ogalala Lace stitch I learnt at a recent workshop looks pretty, it probably isnt a stitch that I would use much in my designs.

While at the workshop though I got inspiration for the piece I have called Belinda.  When I folded the "lace" onto itself, it formed these lovely components.

I simplified the stitch, inserted the centre bead to form these flowers and joined the components together with Chinese crystals to form this brilliant choker style necklace.

JUST FOR FUN - Babette Necklace - This asymmetrical piece of netting is made with the same count stitch on each section, but the use of various size and shaped beads it twists similar to the Ogalala Lace stitch. Beads are a combination of bugle and seedbeads witha scattering of drop beads on the edge. The design is random to represent an old torn fishing net. Gold plated dolphin and coin charms at the back of the netting suggest the battle between ecology and economy in managing our oceans. The necklace measures approx 52cm and is finished with a gold plated toggle clasp.
Babette was another design influenced by the Ogalala Lace stitch.  This asymmetrical piece of netting is made with the same count stitch on each section, but the use of various size and shaped beads it twists similar to the Ogalala Lace stitch.

The design is random to represent an old torn fishing net.  Gold plated dolphin and coin charms at the back of the netting suggest the battle between ecology and economy in managing our oceans.  I designed this piece for the Bead Guild of WA's "Under the Sea" beading challenge.

Another peice I designed for the Bead Guild'schallenge was Shaunda

JUST FOR FUN - Shaunda Necklace - 41 x 17x20mm sections of shell (most are oval, though a few are freeform) threaded onto a headpin, added a Czech firepolished crystal and wrapped them onto 3 strands of crocheted multicoloured fibre yarn. Each length of yarn is a different set of tones, bring together all the shades of a coral reef. Black cotton cord is threaded through the plaited yarn. The cord is then knotted over the yarn allowing some of it to stick out to add extra texture and colour.
I drilled through 41 x 17x20mm sections of shell (most are oval, though a few are freeform) then threaded each onto a headpin, added a Czech firepolished crystal and wrapped them onto 3 strands of crocheted multicoloured fibre yarn which bring together all the shades of a coral reef.

I hand-forged 2 x gold plated "S" clasps which are connected with a jumpring to finish off this design which features an approx 20x30mm freeform teardrop shaped shell pendant.

Reconnecting Arts and Community

A Community Newspaper article on the Pulse Art Studio Community Art Market in Spearwood, Western Australia. The Pulse Art Studio Community Art Market I was honoured to be a stall holder at is developing to now include the Reconnecting Arts and Community Facebook page.

I have taken the following excerpt from that page.

Mission - The overall intention is to bridge the gap between ourselves and our community, getting to know our neighbours, and build better dialog and better relationships with one another.

Through getting involved in the arts, people may also be inspired to pursue other artistic endeavours, and though this foster better communication and build positive relationships.

Description - This working group was created to bring people together to reconnect with creativity, the arts and our community.

In order to do this our group organises ‘Community Art Markets’ where we invite local artists, musicians and crafts people to share their own work with others through stalls, a small exhibition and most importantly through short interactive workshops and demonstrations available to the public. Our goal is to bring something new to the usual ‘markets’ by encouraging a peaceful environment and homely feel, as well as sustainable community space where people can come, experience and participate.

What have I been up to today?

JUST FOR FUN - Earrings - transparent red glass bead with an Adventurine dust swirl and gold findings.Actually, I have been listing some of my new earring designs on my other online stores today.

Before I had my own website, I use to list on eBay.  This was reasonably successful, but I had to compete against lots of mass produced items and it got more and more costly to insert items on that site.

JUST FOR FUN - Earrings - two toned glass pillow bead in aqua and green with silver findingsThen someone told me about Etsy.  I had a look and loved the fact that it was all handmade items (not only jewellery, but bags, clothes, hats, cards - everything you could think of, and joined up there and then.

One day on the Australian Beaders Forum, I saw something about Made-it and checked that out also.  It too was a great Australian site for handcrafted products and I joined them as well.  They have everything from dolls and toys, to cloths, pet products and edible items and everything in-between.  They also have a sister site - Craftumi where you can buy craft supplies.

JUST FOR FUN - Earrings - Sapphire Swarovski crystal, blue glass bead and silver findingsThen a while ago, I received an email from one of the Bead Guild members advising of a new site for handcrafted and ethical products being set up in Australia.  This was called Ethikl.  I messaged them and was soon a member of that site too.  It has a different approach to just handmade, with products having to meet the Ethikl | Eco, Upcycled , Fair Trade Shopping policies.

JUST FOR FUN - Earrings - clear glass heart with silver foil wrapped core of dark green and black.I havent listed on any of these stores lately, as I have been developing my own site, but today I thought that I had too many pairs of earrings to list at one store, so will be adding a few to all my sites over the next few days.  This way I wont overload the viewer, and hopefully I will be able to cross promote each store via the other stores.

ROMANTIC - Earrings - red glass long teardrop earrings. When you are searching for that something special for a gift, remember to look at the artisan stores on these sites.  There are some wonderfully creative people in the world.  A handcrafted gift is so much more interesting that one of the mass produced items found in the department stores.

If you make (or know anyone who makes) handcrafted items, please let them know of these alternative sites to eBay.

JUST FOR FUN - Earrings - Swarovski crystal and Czech glass earrings
I hope you have a wonderful time looking at each of these wonderful online marketplaces and come away with something truly original and unique.

Pulse Art Studio Community Art Markets

This weekend's markets were a success.

I wasn't able to make Saturday, but although it was very hot, there was reports of a good turn out with members of the local Council visiting and making some purchases.  The Council also discussed the option of a possible grant for future Community Markets.  Wonderful!!

Sunday started out hot and muggy, but just as the heat was getting a bit much, a lovely little breeze came in and it turned out to be a delightful afternoon under the trees.

Click on the above picture to see more photos of the markets.

I had set up my stall in the front yard.  My necklaces I left in their storage packets and hung them from the clothesline.  They looked good and were easy for people to see.  I set my earring and bracelet display up under a lovely gum tree near the clothesline and the other side of the front path I put my display table.  I popped my chair under a pine tree and once the breeze came in I was quite happy sitting there beading or wondering around chatting to visitors and other stall holders.

No great crowd showed up, but a steady trickle of people came and went all day.  Some bought, some participated in the workshops and others came for healing sessions or to eat some of the wonderful food that was available.  Most were delightful and the overall energy at the studio was great.

Nis and Danica are planning the next market for October/November so make a note in your diary and drop down for some great Christmas gift ideas, or just to enjoy the atmosphere of the Community Art Markets at the Pulse Art Studio.

Two of my latest creations...

This week I have been working on two totally different pieces.

One is made of glass in a "fan" style and is crisp and clean in design, while the other is a beaded and formed fabric & lace "bib" style necklace using lots of recycled & vintage materials and beads.

I enjoy working with different mediums and seeing where the creative process takes me.  Sometimes I have a definite design that I wish to create while at other times while I may start out with a general idea of what I want to produce, the process seems to have a life of it's own and anything can end up happening.

Click here to see more of my current designs.

Best wishes
Maxine

"Summer" theme Bead Guild challenge

My joint first prize winning entry into the Bead Guild of WA inc Summer challenge. I made this wonderful beach bag.My Beach Bag was chosen as joint winner in the "Summer" challenge.  Yayy!! Such a buzz to be judged by peers.

Today was the first Bead Guild meeting for 2011 and it was nice to catch up with other members after a couple of months off due to the Christmas break.  It was also great to see the variety of items and techniques used in the "Challenge".

My joint first prize winning entry into the Bead Guild of WA inc Summer challenge. I made this wonderful beach bag.The designs included necklaces, bracelets, a beaded mini bikini & beach towel scene through to my beaded and embroided beach bag.  It was a delight to share the win with Jean.  She is such a talented and lovely lady who incorporated beaded beads she had created from the kit into her necklace.

Pictures of all the entries will be posted to the Bead Guild's site in the near future, so remember to check them all out.

I have blogged about the kit and my design process in these previous links. Big Bold & Beautiful and Bead Guild end of year gathering.

The Vision for the Pulseart Studio:
I feel that I am being called to make a space for art and community, here where I live. It’s my passion and dream. I’d like to invite you to share it with me.
My home in Spearwood is no longer needed as a family space to bring up children. I want to make a different kind of home: for art, craft, local people.
I want to share with you, and with our community, my sense of gratitude for life. I want to help others see the beauty around us.
My passion is to create a place where people feel that they can belong. It will be a place to come together through arts, craft and music.
My dream is that we sustain this place, and it sustains us. We can listen and talk to the trees and plants. We can value everything in nature that makes the world the wonder that it is.
So, if you are inspired by my words, please join me. You can get involved in a small way, or a big way. You can join me in creating a space from and for the heart, in a society that is run so much from the head.

I believe that we have all helped create the world around us. If there are things that don’t feel good to us, then it’s up to us to recreate something new.
And it’s time for me to give back to the community of teachers and friends that I have found here in W.A.
Please help me create a space where everyone can use art to celebrate and enjoy the richness and beauty of life.”

Blessings  Nis

A bit about me.

I grew up on a farm just west of Maya, Western Australia.  Later my parents bought a small farm in Latham.

Both are on the Northam-Mullewa Highway, known as the Wildflower Way, about 310km north-east of Perth and 46km east of Coorow, Latham is in country on the edge of the Murchison goldfields noted for its wildflowers and gemstones, although grain growing is the main commercial enterprise.

North and east of Latham it gets pretty sparse and barren, and just to the east of town is the extraordinarily-long “Rabbit Proof” fence that runs north to south in WA in a valiant attempt to keep out vermin such as dingoes and rabbits.

That fence, by the way, is longer than the Great Wall of China.  Some wags suggest that it has had as much success in holding back the vermin as the Great Wall of China had in dissuading the Mongol hordes.

This is the area to head for between July and September if you want to see some of the best and most colourful wildflower displays in WA.  A special favourite among the many species in this area (WA has something like 8000 different varieties) is the well known wreath flower, Leschenaultia macrantha.

After primary school at Latham,  I boarded in Karrinyup with relatives so that I could attend Scarborough Senior High School and later on lived in Perth city and went to Business College before returning home for a few years.

I worked at the Coorow Shire Council Office, which is where I met my husband, Barney and a great mate, Peter.

Just after we were married in 1980, Barney got a new position with Melville City Council and we moved back to Perth.  I worked in Medical Records at Fremantle Hospital where I met my best friend, Irene.

Barney had two daughters and in 1984 we had a son.  We now have 6 Grandchildren and 1 Great-Grandchild.

We moved to Bibra Lake in 1985 and have been here ever since.  We love the lake, its reserve and its wildlife.

Big, Bright and Beautiful

It is finished!!  My "Bead Guild Feb 2011 Bead Challenge" entry

I got the package of beads and threads home and poked them around for a few days before I finally had an idea of how to incorporate all the elements into a single item.

My joint first prize winning entry into the Bead Guild of WA inc Summer challenge. I made this wonderful beach bag.
My joint first prize winning entry into the Bead Guild of WA inc Summer challenge. I made this wonderful beach bag.The theme being summer - I decided to make a beach bag and use the items from the challenge to decorate the pockets.

The bag itself is turquoise linen lined with emerald green ripstop nylon.  It has a large pocket on one side and a smaller one on the other.  The straps are long enough to wear across the body like a satchel (to make it easier when carrying other items in your hands - or trying to keep the kids under control)

My joint first prize winning entry into the Bead Guild of WA inc Summer challenge. I made this wonderful beach bag.The larger pocket has a garden scene with flowers and a butterfly.  I have used the threads as stems and leaves on some of the flowers and in the centre of the large orange "hibiscus".  The hibiscus uses the memory wire to keep its shape and be 3D.

Above the other pocket, on the strapwork, I have wrapped the heart and flower beads onto the chain and added a "bronzed Aussie" face.  The chain and findings are in both silver and gold and are secured to the bag with a turquoise satin ribbon.

I used all the elements in the challenge package, plus added a few of my own items to complete this project.

Wishing you and your families a wonderful and safe Christmas and a joyous and successful New Year.

I have finished the Christmas shopping (except for Bud, the dog's gift) and have all but one gift wrapped.  That one should arrive in the next couple of days.  (Fingers crossed).

While out on my usual "Girlfriend" day with Irene I bought a couple of books to add to the collection that I plan to read over the next couple of months.  Have 3 going at the present (when I have a free moment).

Also have the Bead Guild bead challenge to complete.  I have managed to do quite a bit of this design so far and use most of the types of threads / beads that we were given, though a couple have been more challenging that others and I have had to think outside the "box".  But that is exactly why I like entering competitions and participating in challenges, because you are given the opportunity to use items / methods that you wouldn't generally use.  (Sometimes not as successfully as others - but then othertimes you are pleasantly surprised with the outcome.)

Whatever you have planned over the Festive season, or on your holidays, I hope you have fun, and loved ones to share it with.

With Love & Best Wishes

2010 Bead Guild end of year gathering

This afternoon was the last meeting of the Bead Guild for 2010.  The next meeting will be in Feb 5th, 2011.

We all took a plate to share and members who had extra items that they no longer needed etc, had a bit of a jumble sale.

I wasn't going to buy (I always tell myself that I have enough things), but when I got there, Leslie had some lovely little white centred, clear size 15 seedbeads and a chain of lovely links - so I just had to get them.  The seedbeads, I have been working something out in my head for a while so will use them shortly, but the chain will be added to all the others, just waiting for the right inspiration......

Contents of the annual Bead Jar. Lampworked glass, Czech glass, Indian glass and some seedbeads etc.
I was lucky enough to also be the winner of the annual "Bead Jar" give-away and have come home with some great loot.  I have been sorting through them and already got some great ideas for some of them.  Some are not beads that I would usually purchase, so that will make me think outside the box.  We'll see what develops with those.

This picture shows some of the beads I have sorted so far.  The leaves in the foreground are interesting and have two threading tubes down the back of each one.

Over the Christmas break the Guild Members have a "Challenge" to complete.  This year's title is 'Summer' and from the beads below members can make anything they wish.  They can use as much or as little as they like from the kit, and add more from their own stash, but they will earn points for each bead/item used from the kit.  When telling us the outlines of the challenge, Di did say that she could be evil, and on seeing the amount of fibre and the colour combinations - I am apt to believe her.  Still, challenges and competitions are a great way of getting the creative juices flowing.  I will keep you posted on how I am going with this.....

Items for the Bead Guild of WA Inc Summer challenge. The kit contains, memory wire, chain, seedbeads, lampworked beads, bugles, crackle beads, pearls, flower beads and 5 different forms of fibre.

Everyone participating in this challenge received the same items, in the same colours, but from past challenges there will be an extremely wide variety of finished items shown in February.

Guess who just turned 13 years old

On Thursday, Bud, our lovely little doggy companion turned 13 years old.  He must have either been feeling his age or just thought that he deserved a sleep-in as he was still snuggled up when I left to meet a girlfriend at about 10.30am.

His sight and hearing are both diminishing and he is on medication for arthritis (especially in his back knees as he had both his anterior cruciate ligaments replaced when he was much younger - an old football injury??) but he is still as loving as ever.

Bud our 13 yo faithful companionWe do have to watch him with the children now though as he does snap if he gets hurt - which is a shame - he does spend some time in the laundry or outside when visitors with younger children are here - just to be safe.

His favourite pastime is sitting on my foot, either under one of the desks (computer or beading) or on the ottoman in the lounge having his back rubbed.

In this picture he is checking out the renovations in the spare/grandchildrens room.  Barney was putting a new floating floor down and he replaced the doors throughout the house.  Always under Bud's watchful eye.....

For his birthday dinner he got a couple of chicken bones which he seemed to thoroughly enjoy.  Good thing he doesn’t connect them with the chickens roaming around the back yard - then we would be in trouble.

He is still only a small dog (part Chihuahua and part miniature Fox Terrier), but he is much bigger than the puppy we brought home from Queensland many years ago.  One of Justin's sisters gave Bud to him as a Christmas gift and we had to bring him back to WA on the plane.  He was so tiny he could fit in Barney's shirt pocket, but he had to go in a cage in the cargo area.  When we went to collect him, they joked that they were sorry, but he must have got wet and shrunk.

Our previous dog, Tiny, a most beautiful Labrador Border Collie cross had a stroke when he was 13yo and we had to have him put to sleep.  It was a very sad time – it was awful losing such a wonderful friend.

I am not looking forward to when Bud goes to the “big kennel in the sky”.  He was very sick about 18 months ago and I thought we may have to put him to sleep, but then he picked up, so we have been lucky to get the extra time with him.

Bud and Nikkita - When I told Nikkita (nearly 4yo Granddaughter) that it had been Bud’s birthday, she wanted to know if he had some dog friends over for a party. Don’t children (and pets) just have the best view on things? When I told Nikkita (nearly 4yo Granddaughter) that it had been Bud’s birthday, she wanted to know if he had some dog friends over for a party.  Don’t children (and pets) just have the best view on things?

This is Bud and Nikkita a couple of years ago.  She had put a chip in the space under the seat of her ride-on, and Bud followed her for ages waiting for the opportunity to get it.

Love to you all and hope your family and friends (People or Pets) or all well.

Aura Soma

Yesterday some of the other students and I, caught up with Alysea for lunch and she brought us up to date with what had happened at the Melbourne Aura Soma conference and things are in the future pipeline.

The Equilibrium bottles are at the heart of the AURA-SOMA® system. They are glittering, dual coloured combinations containing the energies of colour, plants and crystals. Vicky Wall, the founder of AURA-SOMA®, conceived them in inspiration. She felt that Equilibrium was a mirror to the soul enabling the individual to recognise in their colour choices the reflection of their deeper aspects. It was lovely catching up with her (she is such a wonderful and generous person) and meeting the other students.

They were all more recent students than me, and some of them are doing wonderful things in their practitioner fields or private lives.

It is so wonderful to see how colour (or lack of) comes into play in all parts of the world and effects every aspect of our hue-man lives.

For some fun check out this page on the Aura Soma site

Wishing you all Love, Light and Laughter,
Maxine :o)

Tabitha fundraiser was a success.

The Fundraiser Cocktail party was a great (although very hot) night.  They raised enough money to build 3 buildings that will each house about 10 people.  That's 30 people who will have a roof over their heads and a home on stilts to protect them from the elements.

Picture of the stilt homes being built - taken from the Tabitha Foundation website.
These wonderful West Aussie ladies are hoping to raise funds to build 35 of these homes in the new year to aid approx 350 of some of the poorest people in Asia.

"Tabitha's aim is to reach out to the despairing in their communities and help them to address their own needs in a holistic and sustainable way. Community development is achieved by encouraging personal savings, providing employment and income by teaching and selling Cambodian handcrafted items, and house-building by volunteers for families who cannot afford a home. Thereby transforming lives to fruitfulness with dignity!"

If you wish to donate to this cause, or help out with their activities, please follow the Tabitha Foundation link.

The necklace I donated has gone to a good home.  I personally know the lucky recipient which is great.  I know she'll get many years of enjoyment out of it.

Button Jewellery

I have finally taken some pictures of the pieces I made using buttons found a couple of years ago in a Retro Shop.  I've had them in my beading room just waiting for the right project.  I hope you enjoy these designs.

RECYCLED & RETRO - Bracelet - Approx 12mm and 4mm jumprings form the chainmaille links that join the buttons of this original bracelet. Some of the button colours are different to the ones used in the Jayna set above, but they still look really great together. An approx 2.5cm hammered gold plated toggle clasp is a beautiful feature of this approx 17cm inside diameter bracelet.
The "Jone" Bracelet is made from 5 buttons of the same size and style, but have slight variations in the colours.  The buttons are linked with large jumprings through each button hole and these are joined by a pair of smaller jumprings forming a simple form of chainmaille.  The hammered toggle clasp makes a great focal point.

RECYCLED & RETRO - Earrings - 10mm and 4mm round jumprings join the buttons to the cascading chain in both the necklace and the earrings of this set. The Retro buttons are a combination of Pale Kakhi, Cream and Grey and the gold-plated chain adds warmth to the design. A lobster clasp completed the design.

The "Jayna" Earring and Necklace set is also made of the the same simple chainmaille jumpring links, but with the addition of fine gold plated chain to join the links and form the necklace.

Fremantle Festival Parade

This afternoon if you want something wonderful to do (or just to enjoy), come into Fremantle and either join in or support the Festival Parade.

The Save Beeliar Wetlands group will be marching and if you would like to be part of it and help protect the endangered Carnaby’s Cockatoo, Indigenous heritage and our wonderful lakes and wetlands for future generations - not put an unwanted and unnecessary (and in the scheme of things - temporary) road through it, then please follow the above links or read the full document below (from which I have just taken the conclusion) or the following email.

Roe Highway Stage 8 was planned more than forty years ago, at a time when the value of the Beeliar Wetlands was not fully understood. It is now recognised that these wetlands have the following important values: · outstanding biodiversity · habitat for wildlife, including migratory waders and rare fauna · Aboriginal cultural and spiritual sites · Important recreational areas. Most people and Government planners now recognise that the MRS alignment for Roe Highway stage 8 is not appropriate. The Environmental Protection Authority has stated that no route through the Beeliar Wetlands is likely to be environmentally acceptable. The environmental damage that would result from any attempt to build the Roe Highway between North and Bibra Lakes would far outweigh any benefit the Highway might bring. As a result of the Freight Network Review, alternative transport routes have been identified and stage 8 of the Roe Highway is now redundant. The strong body of evidence presented and summarised in this report has been consistent in its findings that this Highway should not be built. The arguments against the construction of Roe Highway Stage 8 have been supported by numerous studies and subsequent government reviews and technical reports. This entire process has withstood public and government scrutiny and proven to be robust. It is therefore timely and appropriate to delete Stage 8 from the Metropolitan Region Scheme so that it may be incorporated into the Beeliar Regional Park

After making the shorter tassel earrings in the last post, I thought the longer style might also be interesting - making use of the whole tassel.  The copper one uses the same beadcone as its shorter mate, while the silver one uses a flattened triangular beadcap.  I love the look of these shoulder duster style earrings.

ROMANTIC - Anklet - Fresh water pearls, Czech fire-polished glass crystals in smoky quartz and clear AB are separated by gold plated daisy spacers and scalloped beadcaps. Finished with a gold plated extension chain ended with a matching charm. Length is approx 24cm - 29.5cm with extension chain
The Freshwater Pearl and Czech Smokey Quartz and Clear AB glass crystal anklet has a classy look and has an extension chain making it versatile.  A matching charm ends the chain to finish off the design.  The beadcaps, spacers and chain are gold plated.

It's been a busy few weeks lately as I generally only work 2 days a week job-sharing the reception for a local family run business, but the office manager has been on annual leave so I have worked 4 days each week and then had the Cockburn Community & Cultural show and the Cockburn Spring Fair to get pieces ready for, and haven't had much time left to enter new pieces onto the website, but I plan to do that tomorrow as things go back to "normal" this week.

We have had a lovely weekend off - no work, no designing or beading, but catching up with family and friends and doing some home chores.  Barney even got some more lettuces planted out - the last ones we lost due to the really hot days we had just after they were planted and the fact that we are on 1 day a week water restrictions after one of the driest winters on record.  I am washing up in a basin and using the cooled water to water the "special" plants so we will see what survives.

Our back yard and chookpen
The chooks are a bit sad as they can't come out into the main garden while the plants are so small - they will have to wait a couple of weeks until the plants are bigger and able to cope with the odd nibble and scratch here and there.

They don't miss out, with neighbours and friends sending them scraps over to supplement their diet and the chook-run goes across the back of the entire block under the avocado and mango trees.

Cockburn Spring Fair

I have just finished off the last couple of items for the Rotary Spring Fair tomorrow.

Here are a couple of the Footless Sandles I have been making...

These are just perfect for the beach or pool and expecially a seaside wedding.  Anywhere you want to be barefoot, but add a little bling with the crystal sliders and Czech fire-polished glass crystal beads.

The Neoprene rubber section for between your toes makes them very easy on the feet (no rubbing) and the ribbon tie means they will fit from quite small to large foot size.

I can replace the ribbon with a chain and catch preferred.

And here are some tassel earrings I have been experimenting with...

I love the regal burgundy colour of these tassels and they look brilliant with both the silver and copper findings.  I have made some this length and some longer shoulder dusters.

I have also made bookmarks, key rings, bag charms and many other items suitable for gift giving, stocking fillers or priced low enough for children to be able to purchase.

I offer free wrapping, which includes a small gift card or for a little extra you can purchase a lovely gift box or bag.

And of course there will be loads of my other beautiful items, so treat yourself, or your loved ones, to something special this Sunday.

Remember the Fair is a Holloween theme and there will be fireworks in the evening so come in your party mood.  :o)

I finally got some housework done...

All who know me know that I don’t enjoy housework in the least, but I have been so busy beading for different Events, and have been covering extra days at work as my office manager is on holidays, that the house had gone to the pits.

Well today was the day.  It wasn’t planned, in fact I had more beading planned, but I thought "I will just sweep the floors before I start".  Well several hours later I had swept,  vacuumed and mopped the floors, dusted, swept some cobwebs down, done a load of washing and got it hung outside, tidied through, cleaned the bathroom, toilet and laundry, done the dishes and cleared items off one of the folding tables I need to use next week at the Spring Fair.

In a tidying mode, I decided to give my website a bit of a look over.  I have changed a couple of things, but not too sure if I like the changes so I may still have work to do on it.  Now I am about to go and have a cuppa and see what is on the TV tonight.  If there is nothing on I might continue to tidy the website.

Maxine Faye Clarke designer and artisan for MaxineFaye Handcrafted original and one off beaded jewellery.I need to take some photos tomorrow of the new items I have made and get them listed on the website also, but I think hubby is feeling a bit like a beading widower so I may need to spend some time with him.

Best wishes to you all

Cockburn Community & Cultural Council Exhibition

The Exhibition was only open for 4 hours this afternoon and there was a reasonable turnout for the official opening by the local MP, but it was mostly very quiet with only a few sales.

Some of the work in the exhibition though is outstanding.  The photography section - only small has some great items and I love the one who got first prize.  One of the watercolours of the wharf is also brilliant.  So many diverse styles.

The sculpures and needlework items are interesting and the wood turning is beautiful.

There was a good variety of styles in the Jewellery section with some of the pieces made by other members of the Bead Guild of WA so it is thrilling to be able to say that I won 1st prize in the Wearable Jewellery section with Deandra - a metal and crystal piece.

Tomorrow (Sunday 17th October) the exhibition is open from 9.30 to 4.30 with entertainment and the award ceremony during the afternoon, so hopefully more people will visit during the day and sales will improve a bit.

Cockburn Community & Cultural Council Inc Exhibition and Sale of Work

Well it’s been a busy couple of weeks, but the time is up now.  I set up tomorrow morning for the above Arts & Crafts Exhibition and sale of work.  I have 3 items in the exhibition and a table stall area for the weekend and have been busy making items for sale.

I have made some lovely necklaces and earrings, but have also made some bookmarks, key rings and bag charms and some simple earrings all from between $5 and $15 (one for $18) so children can afford to purchase them either for themselves or as gifts - even as stocking fillers for Christmas.

I have been making some pieces out of old retro buttons and am pleased with how they have turned out.  Still finishing off two of them as I needed more jump rings.  Should get them done over the weekend and will then start taking photos of all the new work to show you.  Haven’t had time yet to take the pictures or even price them yet, let alone get them loaded onto the website - BUT they are coming so stay tuned...!!

If you are able to come to the Exhibition it is in the Spearwood Dalmaniac Club, Cnr Azelia & Hamilton Road, Spearwood, WA from 12.30pm - 4.30pm on Saturday 16th and from 9.30am to 4.30pm on Sunday the 17th.  There will be some entertainment and is a gold coin donation for entry.

Remember - if you can’t get to this Exhibition, that the Cockburn Rotary Spring Fair is on Sunday 31st October at Manning Park, Azalia Road, Spearwood.  Halloween theme and will finish off with fireworks in the evening.  I will have my marquee at this event and a couple of friends for helpers so drop by and say hello.

Best Wishes

What a Beautiful weekend.

It has been such a beautiful weekend.  The weather has been great.  I got into the mood to do some housework yesterday (not like me at all), but it does look good when its done.

Today Barney and I went to a drive to some of the Nurserys around Perth getting things ready for planting this year in the vege garden etc.  We will have to be a little careful of where things go due to the water restrictions, though I often do use a bowl to wash up in and then tip the cooled water onto the plants.  It seems to get most of them through the heat.  Next year we will have to look at getting a rainwater or grey water system set up.  This year we spent our budget on putting more Solar panels on the roof.  We have 10 now and the solar hot water system so hopefully that will help cut the electricity bills.

We bought a blueberry plant today - next year we can be baking blueberry pie? - If we can keep the chooks away from it.

With the cleaning and time in the garden and Nurserys my hayfever is in full bloom and my eyes are so gritty that I havent been able to concentrate for too long on any beading.  Also head feels like it is full of cotton-wool.  I have been dabbling with some vintage buttons I bought from a antique/retro store a couple of years ago.  One necklace has worked out well, just needs the finishing touches and a button and chainmaille bracelet is on the right path - but I have run out of large jump rings so that will have to wait until later this week.  Another piece I am working on is buttons linked with seedbeads and crystals.  It is fiddly and Im not sure if it will work out in the end.  But still - nothing ventured, nothing gained!

I will put some pictures up of them as soon as they are finished.

Love and best thoughts

The Bead Guild Exhibition is over for another year.

I have just returned from collecting items from the Exhibition in South Perth.  At this stage it looks like this will be the last one held in Heritage House as South Perth Council is moving its collection to their Library and I believe the building will be used for other businesses (i.e. Real Estate).

Next year it will possibly be an online competition and exhibition.  Many of the current competitions are done this way and it makes it more accessible to a wider range of artisans.

Tomorrow midday I will see how the “Ogiku” necklace went in the Wongan Arts Society Competition – Looking forward to receiving the judge’s feedback on it.  My first major brick stitched item!

Now I have started making some smaller and “kid” priced items for Christmas gifts to sell at the two Cockburn events.  Today have been making key rings and book marks – trying to do unisex designs, but just can’t help it – I keep adding crystals and bits of bling....  I will have to look at doing a range of Men’s things – I have bought some lovely wood, gemstone and ceramic beads to use for this.

Anyway – Such a beautiful day today so I’m off to crank up the BBQ for tea.

OGIKU (Big Chrysanthemum)

I have just finished this piece for the Wongan Arts Society Exhibition next weekend.

I am pleased with the result, but it doesnt look like the original design.  The componants do, but I was thinking of linking them together as one mass, but it just didnt work and I kept breaking beads and had to make some of the  componants several times :o(

A Kimono print was the inspiration of the colours and design of this piece.

The smaller glass seedbeads are a combination of Japanese Mill Hills, Delicas, Toho with Miyuki fringe beads around the outside of each component.

The larger glass beads consist of black Jablonex (Czech) rounds, Czech Ruby and White Opal Druk beads, glass pearls and faceted Chinese glass crystal.

Some of the componants are flatter while others are more curved than others to give more texture and movement to the design.

The necklace is finished with red Russian braid which ties allowing the length of the piece to be altered to fit either the wearer or the cut of the blouse being worn at the time.

Exhibition feedback :o)

Well another week has zoomed by.  I hope all the Dads out there had a great Fathers Day.  We went to AQUA.  Nikkita loved the sharks and looking at Nemo through the magnifying glass.

ROMANTIC - Necklace. This wood, metal and crystal necklace won First prize and sold on the first day of the exhibition.I have had some lovely feedback from people who have visited the Exhibition in South Perth.  Thank you for taking the time - both to go and look at the Exhibition and to ring or email me with your wonderful reviews.  You made me feel on cloud 9.

I am currently working on the piece I am entering into the Wongan Hills Show.  I have made most of the components, but am having a blank with what to do now.  It isnt sitting just how I want it to do with the original design so I have to tweek it a bit......  Im sure an idea will come to me soon.
JUST FOR FUN - Necklace - This piece was inspired by a Kimono.
In the meantime I have been busy sewing new table clothes and display thingys for the two Cockburn events coming up in October.

This week I received an order of some lovely creamy coloured seedbeads in various sizes, finishes and shapes to make a birthday gift.  I had been looking in the local stores and not found much at all.  Lots of whites, but not the pale yellowy cream I wanted to match some glass pearls.  This will be the next project - once the above piece is sorted!!!

Anyway - back to the sewing machine.  Have a great week and I will catch up next time.
