6 spiral wrapped green beads highlight the copper chain. The beads are a mixture of transparent and frosted glass in rounded, squared and flattened oval shapes. The main necklace is approx 68.5cm long but with the built in extension chain section can go to approx 75cm long. The butterfly pendant is approx 9cm long and supports 12 copper wire wrapped glass beads. The beads are a combination of sizes, shapes and finished and wrapped in several layers of wire giving a textured effect.

I shall be demonstrating how to wire-wrap glass beads into delightful butterfly suncatchers.

A flattened twisted clear glass bead approx 25x20mm has a orange core with silver foil wrapped around the centre. The head is a foil lined clear glass uneven round and the wings are assorted clear glass. From longest antennae to its bottom is approx 6cm long

The central pendant is made of a transparent lampworked bead with flowers of pale blue petals and orange centres. This was the inspiration for the colours of this piece. The addition of the orange really make the blue and silver

The Bead Guild of Western Australia (Inc) Feb 2011 Bead Challenge

At the Feb 2011 meeting my beachbag won joint first prize for this "Summer Theme" challenge.

The kit provided by the Bead Guild of WA for the

We were given this pack of beads and threads and asked to make something with the theme "Summer".
A section of the beach bag I made for the I tried all sorts of designs with the items in the pack, but couldnt think of a jewellery item I liked with the assortment of thread included with the beads.  Then I had a "Ah haa" moment and decided to make a beach bag - what better item for summer!

The bag itself is turquoise linen lined with emerald green ripstop nylon.  It has a large pocket on one side and a smaller one on the other.  The straps are long enough to wear across the body like a satchel (to make it easier when carrying other items in your hands - or trying to keep the kids under control)

Brick stich beaded butterfly wings are stitched onto the pocket of the bag
The larger pocket has a garden scene with flowers and a butterfly.  I have used the threads as stems and leaves on some of the flowers and in the centre of the large orange "hibiscus".  The hibiscus uses the memory wire to keep its shape and become 3D.

Flowers and a butterfly made of fibre, fabric and beads.Above the other pocket, on the strapwork, I have wrapped the heart and flower beads onto the chain and added a "bronzed Aussie" face.  The chain and findings are in both silver and gold and are secured to the bag with a turquoise satin ribbon.

I used all the elements in the challenge package, plus added a few of my own items to complete this project

It was such a buzz to be chosen as one of the winners from such a talented field.

I donated this piece to the Tabitha Foundation for one of their 2010 Fundraising events.

Tabitha Foundation Australia  (TFA) was established in 2002 to support Tabitha Cambodia. "Tabitha's aim is to reach out to the despairing in their communities and help them to address their own needs in a holistic and sustainable way. Community development is achieved by encouraging personal savings, providing employment and income by teaching and selling Cambodian handcrafted items, and house-building by volunteers for families who cannot afford a home. Thereby transforming lives to fruitfulness with dignity!"

TFA Board and members work on a voluntary basis - 100% of all donations are sent to support the programs in Cambodia.

The next Exhibition of Art & Craft will be in 2012.

Oguki (Big Chrysanthumum) was my 2010 entry design.  I was inspired by a Chrysanthumum print on a Kimono for both the colours and the circles edged with fringe beads like the petals of a flower.

JUST FOR FUN - 24 wooden snowflakes have been glued together at right angles to form the supporting 12 links of this large but extremely light handcrafted original and one-off necklace. These wooden links are connected by sections of 4mm and 6mm Golden Shadow Swarovski crystal bicones and boho gold metal melon beads. The centre piece of this design is a large wooden star shape with the centre motif reflecting the smaller snowflakes. Memory wire forms the neckwire shape and is threaded through sections of coiled wire and metal melon beads. The memory wire section overlaps at the back of the design which is claspless. Length from the centre of the neckring to the base of the bottom drop is approx 19cm

The Annual Exhibition, Competition & Sale of Work has finished for another year.  It will return in 1011 in a different format, so keep posted for the updates.
